The Semi-Finals Are Set

After the round of three Playoff games, the semi final matchups have been set.  It is very clear that four teams came prepared for playoff hockey, and they will advance!  The standings after this round are:

PlaceTeamPointsSeed
1Yellow61
2Teal64
3Gold65
4Silver69
5Green22
6Purple23
7Black27
8Orange06
9Red08
10Neon010

The first matchup of the evening, at 5PM, will be a Yellow versus Silver rematch.  Yellow swept Silver in the regular season, outscoring them 6 – 2 in their matches.  Yellow entered the playoffs as the favorite and has lived up to expectations, winning all three games by a combined score of 13 – 4!  Silver, however, entered the playoffs having been unable to string two wins together all season, struggling to score more than 3 goals in any game.  In the playoffs though, they have been a scoring juggernaut, winning all three games by a combined score of 16 – 8.  Only one of these teams will make it four in a row and earn their spot in the Championship game!

Following this will be the other semi-final matchup, at 6PM, a Teal versus Gold rematch.  Teal edged out Gold 1-0-1 in the regular season, outscoring Gold 5 to 3.  Aside from their close meetings, their seasons mirrored each other as well.  They finished the season 1 point apart before both tearing through this playoff round, Teal going 3 – 0 outscoring opponents 13 – 7 and Gold going 3 – 0 outscoring opponents 12 – 3.  This third meeting between the two will be the decider for who advances to the Championship game!

For those that followed the earlier post about regular season seeds that have had success moving on to the semi finals, you will note that the fifth and ninth seeds have advanced for the first time.  While the top six seeds have mostly filled these spots, every seed except the tenth have now advanced.

The remaining six teams will play their final game of the season against other eliminated teams.  At 7PM, Green will rematch with Purple, where Green edged Purple out 1-0-1 in their earlier games.  At 8PM, Orange will rematch with Black where both prior meetings were ties!  At 9PM, Red will rematch with Neon who also tied both regular season meetings!

The semi final winners on 3/19 will face each other in the championship game on 3/26, following the consolation game.  The consolation game will be at 5:00 PM on 3/26.

Formats for the semi final and final game vary from the regular season and round of three, as ties are not allowed.  In the semi final games, if tied at the end of 3 periods, there will be one sudden death overtime period, followed by a 3 player shootout round, followed by individual shootout rounds with different shooters, until a winner emerges.  The finals, if tied at the end of 3 periods, there will be sudden death overtime periods until a winner emerges.

Let’s pack the arena and support our team and Coach Skelly (AOTHA Orange) to push for the a big win to the Frozen Four.

Playoffs – Week 3

After a regular season that came down to the final week to settle nine of the ten seeds, only two weeks of playoffs have determined three of the four semi-final participants.  Reminder, all teams will have a game the next week, regardless of whether they are in one of the semi-final matches.  Here are the standings after two weeks of playoffs.

PlaceTeamPointsSeed
1Yellow41
2Teal44
3Gold45
4Silver49
5Green22
6Black27
7Purple03
8Orange06
9Red08

The third week of the playoffs opens at 5PM with a re-match of Gold and Orange.  Gold edged out Orange in the regular season series, 1-0-1, outscoring Orange 9 – 5.  Orange will not be able to advance with a win, regardless, and Gold will advance, with the 1st to 4th place finish still possible, but no lower.

Following will be a rematch of Red and Purple at 6PM.  Purple edged out Red 1-0-1 in the regular season series, outscoring Red 7 – 6.  Both teams are 0-2 in the playoffs, and will not advance with a win.

Next up at 7PM will be a Black and Teal rematch.  Teal won the regular season series 1-0-1, with a 6-6 tie and an 8-2 win.  Teal has locked in their advancement, but not their position.  Teal can finish anywhere from 1st to 4th, but will not be eliminated.  Black would move up with a win, but only one spot, so can finish no higher than 5th.

At 8PM will be a Green and Silver rematch, in the most consequential meeting of the night.  Green dominated the regular season 2-0, outscoring Silver 10-3, but both teams will enter this game in a very different place than the last time they met.  Green narrowly righted the ship last week after a four game winless streak, where their league leading goal scoring average stalled and they were only able to score 9 goals in those 4 games.  Silver finished the regular season 0-5-2 in their last 7, scoring 2.4 goals per game, but has scored 10 in two playoff games en route to their first two game winning streak of the season.  The winner of this game will advance, and the loser will not, where a tie will advance Silver.

The evening will close with a 9PM rematch between Yellow and Neon.  Yellow dominated the regular season series, winning both games outscoring Neon 11-3.  Yellow will advance regardless of this result, and Neon will not.

Playoffs – Week 2

Remember that the semi-final round will be filled by the top four teams from this round of three games.  These will be determined by points in the round, and ties broken by regular season seed.  After the first night of playoffs, the standings for the semi-finals round are:

PlaceTeamPointsSeed
1Yellow21
2Teal24
3Gold25
4Black27
5Silver29
6Green02
7Purple03
8Orange06
9Red08
10Neon010

The second week of the playoffs opens at 5PM with a re-match of Green and Red.  Green outscored Red 13-7 en route to two wins in their regular season meetings.  Both will be looking for their first playoff win, needing one to keep their chances of advancing alive.

Following will be a rematch of Black and Yellow at 6PM.  In both meetings in the regular season, they skated to 1-1 ties!  A Black win leaves them in control of their advancing in the final week, while a win for the number 1 seed Yellow will lock them into advancing.

Next up at 7PM will be a Gold and Neon rematch.  Gold and Neon split the regular season meetings, with Neon outscoring Gold 7 -5.  Neon needs a win to remain in contention to advance, and Gold will control its destiny with a win as it attempts to become the first 5 seed to advance.

Following this at 8PM will be an Orange and Silver rematch.  Orange outscored Silver 8 to 7 in their matches, splitting the series.  Orange needs a win to remain in contention to advance and avoid being the first 6 seed not to advance, while SIlver will control its ability to advance in the final week with another win.

The evening will close with a 9PM rematch between Teal and Purple.  Purple outscored Teal 7 to 5 in the series as they split their regular season matches.  Purple needs a win to keep their chances to advance alive, while Teal will certainly control its path to advance with a win, and may be locked in to advance pending other earlier results.

Playoff Pairings – Round of Three

The regular season has wrapped up and the matchups are now established.  As a reminder, seeding is determined by points, then wins, head to head, and then point differential.

Yellow closed the season with a win over Neon to lock up the first seed, leading the league with 29 points.  With the first seed, Yellow will match up against Orange, Black, and Neon.  Yellow has a 4-0-2 record against these teams in the regular season, opening against Orange where Yellow won both prior matches.

Green backed into the second seed with a loss to Teal, finishing with 26 points.  With the second seed, Green will match up against Gold, Red, and Silver.  Green has a 5-1-0 record against these teams in the regular season, opening against Gold where they split the season series, trading wins.

Purple held on to the third seed by fending off Black in their regular season finale, finishing with 22 points.  With the third seed, Purple will match up against Teal, Red, and Silver.  Purple has a 4-1-1 record against these teams in the regular season, opening against Silver where Purple won each of their meetings.

Teal finished strong with a win over Green, which it needed to hold onto the fourth seed, earning 20 points.  With the fourth seed, Teal will face Purple, Black, and Neon.  Teal has a 4-1-1 record against these teams in the regular season, opening against Neon where they won both regular season meetings.

Gold closed with a win over Red, earning 19 points and the fifth seed.  With the fifth seed, Gold will face Green, Orange, and Neon.  Gold has a 3-2-1 record in the regular season against these teams, opening against Green where they traded regular season wins.

Orange jumped into the sixth seed with a season ending win over Silver, finishing with 17 points.  With the sixth seed, Orange will face Yellow, Gold, and Silver.  Orange has a 1-4-1 record against these teams, opening against Yellow where Orange is lost both meetings so far.

Black fell short on closing night against Purple, and fell back to the seventh seed with 16 points.  With the seventh seed, Black will face Yellow, Teal and Red.  Black has a 1-2-3 record against these teams, opening against Red where they have split the season’s meetings.

Red fell to Gold to end the season, finishing with 14 points and the eighth seed.  With the eighth seed, Red will face Green, Purple, and Black.  Red is 1-4-1 against these teams in the regular season, and opens against Black where they each earned a win.

Silver finished with 10 points after falling to Orange in their regular season finale, earning the ninth playoff seed.  With the ninth seed, Silver will face Green, Purple, and Orange.  Silver is 1-5 against these teams, opening against Purple who has defeated them in both meetings so far.

Neon fell to Yellow in their finale, earning 9 points and the tenth seed.  With the tenth seed, Neon will face Yellow, Teal, and Gold.  Neon is 1-5 against these teams, opening against Teal who has defeated them in both meetings so far.

All teams are guaranteed these three games, after which the top 4 point earners in these three games will advance (2 points for a win, 1 for a tie, 0 for a loss), with the higher seed winning the tiebreakers to advance to the semi-finals. Good luck to all!

Playoff Scenarios

Heading into the final week of the regular season, no final seeding has been determined!  As a reminder, regular season seeding is determined by:

1)      Points

2)      Wins

3)      Head to head

4)      Point differential

Sunday’s matchups

In the first matchup of the night at 6:00, Teal versus Green, Teal enters in 4th place and needing a series evening win, and a Purple loss against Black later, to finish in the 3rd playoff seed.  A Teal loss and a later victory for Gold over Red would have Teal drop to the 5th seed.  All other scenarios have Teal finishing in the 4th seed.  Green enters in 2nd place where they need a win and a Yellow non win, or a tie and a Yellow loss, to move into the 1st seed.  All other scenarios have Green in the 2nd playoff seed.

Following this at 7:00 Neon skates against Yellow.  Neon enters the game in 10th place and looks to even this series, which combined with a later Silver loss to Orange would have Neon finishing in the 9th seed.  All other scenarios have Neon finishing in the 10th seed.  Yellow enters the last week of the season in 1st place with only Green competing with them for the 1st seed.  A win, or otherwise matching Green’s result will lock Yellow in the 1st playoff seed.

The third game of the night will feature Black and Purple at 8:00.  Black enters the last week in 6th place with the most variance possible, with scenarios leading to the 5th seed through the 8th seed.  A Black series evening victory and Gold loss to Red will have Black in the 5th playoff seed.  A Black loss would allow either or both Orange and Red to pass them with their victories, moving Black as far back as the 8th playoff seed.  Purple enters in 3rd place, and only a loss and a Teal win can move Purple to the 4th playoff seed, otherwise they will finish with the 3rd playoff seed.

The fourth game of the night pits Gold against Red at 9:00.  Gold enters in 5th place and will need a series sweeping win over Red and a Teal loss against Green to move into the 4th playoff seed.  Only Black can pass Teal with a Teal loss and Black win, moving into the 6th playoff seed.  All other scenarios result in the 5th playoff seed.  Red enters in 8th place only looking to move up.  A win over Gold and they can pass either or both a losing Black and an Orange team who ties or loses, able to move as high as the 6th playoff seed, or hanging back as far as the 8th playoff seed.

The evening ends with a Silver versus Orange rematch at 10:00 for prime viewing by our west coast viewers.  An earlier Neon victory would require 9th place Silver to secure a tie or better to retain the 9th seed, where a loss with a Neon victory would drop Silver to the 10th playoff seed.  Orange enters in 7th place, where a victory and a Black loss will move them into the 6th playoff seed, or a loss and a Red victory would move them into the 8th playoff seed.  All other scenarios leave Orange in the 7th playoff seed.

Playoffs – round of three

How are matchups for these three games determined?

This will be the fifth year we’ve used this playoff format, where four will advance from this round of three to the semi-finals.  Intent has been to favor results from the regular season, but provide everyone with an opportunity to advance.  Four seasons isn’t enough to be statistically significant, but it is interesting.  Of the four seasons, the 1 seed has advanced twice, the 2 seed three times, the 3 seed twice, the 4 seed three times, the 5 seed never, the 6 seed all four years, the 7 and 8 seed once each, and the 9 and 10 seed have yet to advance.  I am now most curious what will happen with those 5 and 6 seeds this season, as there are five teams in the hunt for these two spots.

Look for updates next week about the Playoffs and matchups.  While the lower seeds certainly have a tougher schedule to make it to the semi-finals, all teams will begin the Playoffs needing only three wins to ensure their semi-final berth.  Good luck!
